About the FQU
Please excuse my need to maintain some distance, deep down I am still quite the shy one and even though you wouldn't think it if you met me, it is all just an act. So is The Fast Quiet Underground.
I will divulge some things to you though, if I don't there is a chance that you might miss some of the point. I grew up in 'new town' in the 70's, what industry there was had already disappeared by the end of the decade and so my formative teenage years where spent in a 'paper' town, all new offices and ill fitting Next suits. Wool Mills and Coal Mines produce great actors and playwrites, desk calculators and filing, in my experience, are not good motivators to make great art. I worked in offices first, then went back to college, gaining a reasonable fine art degree from a less than impressive college. I am proud of my education, not necessarily the degree.
The Fast Quiet Underground first appeared in 1993 as a series of hidden cards, it is not hard to see that I was playing to type as the rebellious student. The name incidentally is from a poem, well ok, not quite a poem, more a manifesto (I think now I would call it a Mission Statement), it still is a fairly accurate description of my working methodology, the name that is, I gave up wanting to bring Art to the masses when I entered the work force and realised that they really didn't care.
If you have the time you might like to read the Tao'. Maybe I am just mellowing with age, or perhaps, if I can say this, the longer the Tao goes on, the more I find a need to order, process and beautify my world.
Regards
